Inner-city Johannesburg was once a commercial hub for large mining companies seeking riches in South Africa's biggest city, but decades of neglect and disinvestment have left residents facing high levels of crime and poverty.
The historical (and rather grandiose) Rand Club feels out of place in the CBD of Johannesburg. Many South Africans will tell you that the epicentre of JHB is nothing but 1.09 square kilometres of calamity, crime, and crisis. Johannesburg Inner City Partnership (JICP) CEO David van Niekerk doesn't share that sentiment.
