When Mac Scothorn was beginning his optometry practice in the late 1990s, one of his stops was at the former Botetourt County Correctional Center, in Troutville.
During a few years seeing to inmatesâ vision needs, Scothorn learned of an intensive drug treatment program that sought to keep offenders out of the state prison, also known as Camp 25.
He remembered one inmate telling him that the program had saved him from destroying his family, and he looked forward to a life on the outside.

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – Botetourt County’s brand-new Colonial Elementary School is filled with top-notch technology; however, just over a week ago, stepping into the school was like stepping back in time as the school was off the grid for a month.
During construction, the incumbent internet provider couldn’t provide connectivity to the school in time for the its opening on January 25.
“It’s been difficult to go that long without the internet,” said Principal Tammy Riggs.
She worked with county leaders, Blue Ridge Towers and BriscNet to come up with a fix and found a temporary solution, a portable tower.
548 New Addresses Including 30 Businesses Part of Fiber Expansion Project
BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI) has awarded a grant of $1,364,337 to Lumos and Botetourt County to assist with the expansion of fiber in Botetourt County. The grant will be used as part of a project to install fiber to provide high-speed internet to 548 new addresses, including 30 businesses. Approximately 52% of the cost of the project is being funded by the VATI grant, and the remainder will be contributed in partnership with Lumos, a premier provider of fiber broadband internet, and Botetourt County.
“This expansion makes it possible for more people in Botetourt County to have fast, reliable fiber internet, which has become a necessity because so many of us are working and learning from home. We are very much looking forward to this new project and excited to bring fiber optic broadband to more households in Botetourt County,” said Diego Anders
