The University of Sydney has awarded an honorary doctorate to Shellie Morris in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to music performance and education, in particular for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, their culture and language.
“As one of Australia’s finest Indigenous singer-songwriters, Shellie Morris has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians and youth, by helping them to capture their stories and experiences,” said University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Stephen Garton.
Raised in Sydney by her adopted non-Indigenous family Ms Morris began singing at an early age performing in church choirs. In the 1990s, she moved to Darwin to find her Indigenous Yanyuwa, Gudanji, Marra and Garrwa families and Elders.
Kutcha Edwards. Wuigada in Mutti Mutti means to sing .
In this edition of Wuigada we hear from Maningrida in Arnhem Land, with
Ripple Effect Band. While following in the tradition of saltwater rock from the top end,
Ripple Effect Band forged new ground as the first women from their community to play instruments and form their own all women band. They sing in the languages of their people, Ndjébbana, Burarra, Na-kara and Kune and they have a story to tell about their land, their languages and their culture. We are currently working on recording an album, due for release in 2022 – hopefully by then we can plan some touring to share our music with everyone.

Wuigada was named and developed by the highly acclaimed indigenous singer songwriter,

Waveney Yasso. Since moving on from Black Salt, Waveney has been forging ahead with multiple other exciting musical pursuits. There are a lot of interesting projects based in Meanjin, Brisbane that I have been excited to be involved with. Firstly, I help to run an event with Astrid Jorgensen called Pub Choir, which hopefully with the ease of restrictions will return to Brisbane again. I am also super stoked to be working alongside
