As a PhD student at University College London and the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), Carolyn Thompson is currently a London-based researcher and educator – but her path into primatology took a geographically diverse root. First charmed to the order of animals by a miscommunication between herself and a macaque, Thompson now specializes in gibbons including the Hainan gibbon, the rarest primate in the world. Here, she tells us that while working with primates might not involve all that much interaction with animals (at least, not on purpose), you do sometimes find yourself running after hose-wielding orangutans.

Digital crowdsourcing platform UpLink was created to address the world’s most pressing problems.
The initiative seeks sustainable solutions to tackle issues such as climate change and social injustice.
Projects are also aimed at tackling the impact of the global coronavirus pandemic.
The pandemic has also influenced this year’s new trends for smaller trees and for families to buy more than one.
“With many people working from home they are focussing more on decorations, but have less space and don’t want falling leaves,” adds David Sumner, CTW’s online sales director.
Estimates vary, but when compared to a natural tree responsibly disposed of, customers concerned to lower their carbon footprint need to use their synthetic trees for at least a decade. CTW s ones come with a 10 year warranty.
Sustainability drove the City of London’s decision to replace the natural tree it has habitually chosen with one it can use annually.
