Baroness Chakrabarti, a Labour life peer, made her remarks in a discussion on Monday night s edition of BBC Newsnight. She was joined on the programme by Tory MP Ruth Edwards and a former Met Police Commander, John Sutherland. The panel was discussing the controversial new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, that is being discussed this week by MPs in Parliament.

The UK was able to secure sufficient supplies of Covid vaccines, after declining to join the EU s procurement scheme. At the time, Mr Johnson was severely criticised for his decision to go it alone. However, the Prime Minister appears to have played a blinder, as Brussels lags behind with its vaccine rollout.

Tuesday, March 23 will mark the anniversary of the first national lockdown ordered by the Prime Minister as the country faced its initial wave of the deadly virus. In a televised national address, Mr Johnson solemnly informed the country of his decision to close all shops and restaurants and to ask people to stay at home. A total of 335 people had lost their lives to the virus by that stage.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said that 30 cases of blood clotting had been reported among five million people who had received the jab on the continent so far. The EU has launched an investigation into the incidents, with several countries suspending their use of the Astrazeneca jab. The Prime Minister defended the vaccine, insisting that it was safe to use and would continue to be rolled out in the UK.
