Neal’s Yard was considering hiring its own lorry in partnership with other cheese suppliers to minimise the risk of disruption
Neal’s Yard Dairy has warned sending mixed loads of goods to the EU is like “playing Russian roulette”, with incorrect paperwork delaying lorries for up to a week.
Small businesses typically rely on ‘groupage’ loads to export their goods, in which shipments from different exporters for different customers are grouped together on one lorry. The practice means paperwork problems with one can delay or even block transport for them all.
Consultants were paid £17m to help UK prepare for Brexit border strife
Deloitte benefited the most from contracts linked to border plans, earning £4.9m

Consultants netted £17m from the Government’s border controls last year, as ports were forced to prepare for the end of the Brexit transition period.
Over eighty payments were made to six consultants last year for work with either the Border Delivery Group, the committee responsible for plans, or for other related contracts, HMRC data shows.
Overall the Government has spent over £50m on rent, logistics or consultancy on border delivery projects, including monthly payments of over £700,000 for the Ashford truck site.
Only three lorries were turned away at the Kent border on New Year’s Day, making a mockery of dire predictions of chaos at the ports.
Ministers were given the figure at a Cobra meeting chaired by Cabinet Minister Michael Gove on Friday evening.
The three trucks arrived at Dover without the correct paperwork to leave for Europe, but the problem was ‘quickly resolved’. All three were fined.
Last night, a Government source told The Mail on Sunday: ‘People thought there would be disruption, but that has not come to pass. It is good that things are flowing smoothly.’
The briefing is understood to have been delivered by Emma Churchill, director-general of the Border Delivery Group.
