u.s. president joe biden, on tuesday, will deliver his first speech to the united nations general assembly since taking office. it s viewed by many as a critical moment for mr. biden to articulate his foreign policy. he is expected to address the pandemic, climate change, human rights, and the assault on democracy around the world. but events over the past several weeks are complicating his debut at the general assembly, including ongoing criticism of the u.s. withdrawal from af afghanistan and what could happen to the country with the taliban in charge. then, there is the crisis at the southern border where his administration is struggling to manage an immigration system overwhelmed by record migration. he is also battling the spread of the delta variant, vaccine hesitancy across the country, and a confusing booster shot rollout.
the most hopeful news on the pandemic front in a while. pfizer released top line results from the vaccine trial for children age 5 to 11 this morning. it says their two-dose vaccine was safe, well tolerated and produced an immune response about equal to older populations. the company added results for children younger than five could also come later this year. and while the company released limited data to back up the claims, pfizer says it has enough to apply for fda emergency approval by the end of the month. meaning that millions of children could start getting shots in the arms before the new year. all this comes as the biden administration struggles to get a grip on the pandemic. today the white house announced starting in november all foreign travelers flying to the u.s. will be required to get fully vaccinated and tested prior to travel. not to mention this week was supposed to kick off the administration s massive booster shot rollout. in a controversial meeting on friday, the
all right. ambassador john bolton, thank you for coming on the show, and taking some time out on this saturday evening. and go check out that cnn poll and all the standards behind how we came up with those numbers. i would love to see the underlying data. all right, it s all online. thanks so much, ambassador john bolton. the fda vaccine advisory board recommends pfizer boosters. but only for two specific groups. when we come back, i m going to speak to dr. leana wen about the future of the booster shot rollout. ed digging and found some really cool stuff. it was just a lot of fun. just to talk to my parents about it and to send it to my grandparents and be like, hey this person we re all related to look at this crazy stuff they did in arizona 100 years ago. it actually gives you a picture of their life, so you get to feel like you re walking the same path they did.
risk. and then the last, look, if people like health care workers such as myself and dr. redlener who got their vaccines in december, if the efficacy is going down, we re around vulnerable people and so occupationally that makes sense. the public policy wise it makes sense for those folks to also be protected. i don t necessarily think it s to appease or to try to come to terms. i think that is where the science currently stands. dr. redlener, how did the white house get to a place where the president made an announcement about a booster shot rollout plan? was he sort of blind sided by where the panel was breaking in terms of their recommendations or was it maybe this policy goal of preventing infections to stop the spread of delta?
it will begin its booster shot rollout on september 20th and that s next week and there are mixed messages as we get into the timetable, andrea. dr. hotez, your world is the world of science. the president promised by july 4th victory of this and the delta variant messed up that time to say the least. now you ve got him again suggesting september 20th which is monday and it will not get emergency use authorization on monday and where do you come down as to whether there s enough data to warrant general use for the population as a whole or should you be limited to immunocompromise, to its citizens or something else? andrea, from the beginning i ve been saying this will be a three-dose vaccine, likely the moderna is as well because we
