Kāpiti residents rubbish dumped at controversial landfill

Levin landfill at Hōkio. Photo: Supplied / Catalyst Group A lot of the rapidly growing area s waste has, for years, been dumped at the Levin landfill near Hōkio Beach. Hōkio is in breach of some resource consents, though it is still operating. It has been a flashpoint of complaints and court action, culminating in a deal - now fraught - done in 2019 to shut it by 2025. Kāpiti District Council said its contractor Midwest Disposals, and not the council, controls where its rubbish goes. Mayor K Gurunathan said the Resource Management Act put it on the contractor to use a consented landfill.

Central Landfill committee to be re-established ahead of waste renewal

Brianna Mcilraith15:56, Jul 06 2021 Andy Jackson/Stuff A committee overseeing the Central Landfill in Eltham will be re-established. Plans to bring landfill back to Taranaki rather than trucking it out of the region have taken another step. At a full New Plymouth District Council meeting on Tuesday, all 15 elected members voted in favour of re-establishing the Central Landfill Committee as a further move towards opening a landfill site at Eltham. About $7.5 million was spent on the Eltham site, but it was scrapped in 2018 - before it even opened - when all three district councils agreed to truck waste more than two hours to Bonny Glen Landfill, near Marton.

Waste, water, and pink bike rack discussed at New Plymouth District Council committee meeting

Stratford District Council and South Taranaki District Council also need to agree. Last week, mayor Neil Holdom said having Central Landfill as a plan B gave them extra bargaining power with Midwest Disposals, the company that runs Bonny Glen. Earlier in the meeting, a decision was made to move the pink bike rack on Devon St West after retailers asked for the parking space back. Taranaki councils plan to build regional composting plant

A regional facility would cater to residential and commercial organic waste from around the region. (File photo) The three district councils of Taranaki are planning to build a regional composting facility to stop food scraps being trucked out of the region. New Plymouth is the only district council that currently collects and disposes of food waste, but it is having to truck it 300 kilometres north to Hampton Downs. This is because the Remediation New Zealand-run facility in Uruti that the council planned to use when it launched food scrap recycling in September 2019 does not have resource consents. The company has applied for consent renewal and is expecting a decision later in the month.
