Today In Johnson City History: May 24

May 24, 1867: The East Tennessee Union Flag ran a classified advertisement for Sam Kirkpatrick. “I loaned a friend two volumes of ‘Youngs Night Thoughts’ one year ago. My said friend will return them if he knows himself for I have forgotten who he is.” The advertisement was signed, “Sam. J. Kirkpatrick.” The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way on the masthead. Inside of the newspaper, however, the city was spelled that way; it was also spelled as Jonesboro. May 24, 1888: The Comet reported, “Our farmer friends tell us the frost last week did a good deal of damage to gardens and also hurt wheat in some sections badly. There will be some peaches around the mountains and in sheltered localities and the apple crop will be short. Oats and clover look badly on account of the drough (sic) that began early in the spring.”

Downtown Elizabethton holds first First Friday of the season

ELIZABETHTON — Downtown Elizabethton held its first First Friday of the season Friday, with many shops and restaurants offering sales and staying open late. In addition to shopping and dining, several other activities were going on. Watts Dance Studio put on a program to a large and enthusiastic crowd in the backyard of the Elizabethton Fire Department, the first of three performances during the evening hosted by the Bonnie Kate Theater. The other two were the East Tennessee Ballet Academy and another dance show put together by the Appalachian Irish Dance Academy. The longest lines were at the Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce, where people stood in line for registration packet for the Music and Miles Half Marathon. The race takes place today and extends from one end of Elizabethton to the other.

Bonnie Kate presents three jazz groups next Saturday

ELIZABETHTON — In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, the Bonnie Kate will be holding an evening of music, featuring three jazz groups next Saturday, April 24. The concert signifies a reopening of Bonnie Kate performances after coming to a halt during the past year because of the COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. The performances start at 7:30 p.m. and there will be hour long concerts for each group, ending at 10:30 p.m. The groups performing will include “Eddie Dalton and the TJO Seven”; “The Peterson Perkins Quintet”; and “The ETSU Jazz Faculty & Friends”. “Eddie Dalton and the TJO Seven” is a group of very talented jazz musicians from Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. The group is led by drummer Eddie Dalton and composed of a select group of players from the Tri-Cities Jazz Orchestra. These musicians are well-known for their “jazz chops” in our area and audiences are thrilled with their performances. Many of the

Bonnie Kate Theater to hold jazz concert in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month

ELIZABETHTON — The Bonnie Kate Theater, 115 S. Sycamore St., in downtown Elizabethton, will be observe Jazz Appreciation Month in April with a concert featuring three separate jazz groups on Saturday, April 24, from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. The groups who will be performing include Eddie Dalton and the TJO Seven; the Peterson Perkins Quintet; and ETSU Jazz Faculty & Friends. Proceeds from the concert will go to help with the Friends of the Bonnie Kate project to restore the theater to its 1926 glory. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or online at www.ShowTix4U.com. The music will begin at 7:30; but before the musicthere will be on-site food trucks and craft beers provided by Riverside Taphouse.
