Lt Laitinen Gives Sully Police Station Update

Lt. Josh Laitinen At the Dec. 2 meeting of the Sully District Police Station’s Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC), Lt. Josh Laitinen, the assistant station commander, gave local residents an update on crimes in the community. And as always, larcenies from vehicles are a continuing problem. “We have about 40 per month in the Sully District,” said Laitinen. “Typically, items are taken from unlocked vehicles – so lock your cars and don’t leave any valuables inside. Airbags are being stolen, as well.” In addition, he said the police have received calls regarding bill-payment checks being stolen from mailboxes. Then, said Laitinen, the thieves altered these checks and cashed them for a higher amount than the sender intended.

As the Knights of Columbus marched past his Fairfax City home last week, Marine Corps and WWII veteran Jim “Horse” Smith raised his arm and saluted. But in reality, everyone participating in the Dec. 7 parade was there to honor him for his 100th birthday. Organized by Al Leightley of the Knights of Columbus, it traveled from Old Post Road to Colony Road, where Smith and his family have lived for the past 70 years. And it culminated with proclamations from the Virginia General Assembly and the City of Fairfax.

Connecting People on Opposite Sides of Route 28

The brand-new ramp from Chantilly’s Walney Road/Cabells Mill Drive intersection over Route 28. It’s been a long time coming – but once again, drivers traveling from the Walney Road/Cabell’s Mill Drive intersection in Chantilly will be able to cross Route 28 to reach Braddock Road in Centreville. They used to be able to do it all the time; but after VDOT cut off their access, more than a decade ago, they’ve been forced to take a detour north and double back south. But on Nov. 25, the section of Walney Road west of Cabell’s Mill Drive was reopened, leading westbound Walney traffic up a ramp to a brand-new overpass above Route 28. That means motorists there may now cross Route 28 to reach Braddock Road directly.
