Throughout the pandemic artists of all genres have shown us what it means to think outside the box, and instead of running out of ideas 15 months in, the creative community seems to be picking up steam.
Local playwright Jim Dalglishâs new play, âTeacher of the Year,â which is being presented episodically beginning Friday, May 28, was conceived as a work to be performed under the constraints of the pandemic and to be presented entirely online. In a statement, Mr. Dalglish explains how he decided to take things even further: âI decided to write a new play that couldâ¦not only accommodate social distancing, but also use new media to explore how the pandemic has altered the way humans have adapted to connect with each other.â
Murder mystery part of “radio hour” fundraiser
In an unusual mix of eras and technologies born out of pandemic necessity, the theatrical fundraiser for the West Falmouth Library this year will be a 1940s radio play that uses 2021 Zoom virtual capabilities.
The library and writer/director Lisa Jo Rudy’s Not My Monkeys company will present “The Music and Murder Radio Hour,” a nostalgic virtual variety show featuring “vintage” ads, musical acts and a murder mystery/comedy.
Not able to gather in person for the fundraising party this year, Rudy reached out to local actors and got more than two dozen to participate via Zoom and video for a one-hour online presentation with two showings.
Local musicians can’t play live, but that hasn’t stopped those who typically organize benefit concerts at this time of year from helping neighbors in need.
Both the Cape Cod Christmas Cavalcade and Yule for Fuel featuring dozens of performers among them are back in a virtual way this year. Online compilations of numbers from past shows are available to watch, with hopes that you’ll also donate to help people who are having trouble paying for housing and paying fuel bills. Watch for some live online appearances and 2020 surprises.
Another online concert put together by various acts aims to help buy food for employees in the hospitality industry hit hard by the effect of COVID-19 on travel.
