They gathered in private homes, an American Legion post, and even the basement of a bank. For 16 new Staten Islanders back in 1965, prayer, not the meeting place, mattered most.
They would become the first congregants of today’s Gateway Church in Richmond Valley, inspired by a charismatic young minister destined to be a force in the borough’s spiritual community.
The Rev. Dr. Daniel Mercaldo, 81, Gateway’s founder and senior pastor for more than five decades who dedicated his life to helping others navigate challenges and celebrate successes, died Jan. 7 in NCH Baker Hospital, Naples, Fla.

NAPLES, Fla. Arlene Fraser Sniffen passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Dec. 12, 2020, at the age of 84.
Predeceased by her husband John, Arlene was the beloved mother of Josh (Janet) Sniffen and Scott (Tracey) Sniffen, and Gram to Taylor, Zack, Max and Emily. She was the only daughter of Gardner and Mazie Fraser, and leaves behind two of her three brothers, Donald and Alan. Her brother Gardner predeceased her.
Arlene grew up in Stamford, Conn., attended Stamford High School and worked locally for the Southern New England Telephone Co., as well as Pitney Bowes. She was also quite creative and taught ceramics to many locals in the Stamford area.
