Deji Elumoye in Abuja and Dike Onwuamaeze in Lagos Some members of the organised private sector (OPS) have advised state governors to eliminate multiple taxations and introduce measures to further improve Ease of Doing Business (EoDB) in order to attract investors and promote economic growth. This is coming as Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said Nigeria has faced severe economic downturns, hence the need to widen the tax net so that more people who are eligible to pay tax can pay. The advice by the OPS followed the recent EoDB report released by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC), which ranked Gombe State number one among the 36 states with an overall average score of 7.69 out of a maximum score of 10.

Bauchi Gov: NNPC Zero Remittance to FAAC, Recipe for Crisis

Obinna Chima, Dike Onwuamaeze in Lagos, Chuks Okocha and James Emejo in Abuja Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, yesterday warned that Nigeria will be in chaos and financial hardship if the NNPC does not rethink its decision to make zero remittance to the Federation Account in April because of the need to defray the cost of petrol subsidy. The NNPC had in a letter to the Accountant-General of the Federation warned that it would be unable to make any remittance to the central account of the federation for distribution in May because it needed to defray around N111 billion cost of February’s subsidy on petrol.

OPS Urges FG to Save Economy as Insecurity Worsens

By Dike Onwuamaeze Members of the organised private sector (OPS) have urged the federal government to rise to the occasion and arrest the worsening insecurity in the country in order to salvage the nation’s economy from a total collapse. Representatives of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) and the Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), in separate telephone interviews with THISDAY said the economy could slide back into another recession if the government fails to combat insecurity. They also warned that insecurity could hurt manufacturing, severely undermine microeconomic stability, scare away investments and constrain multinationals to shut down businesses and vacate the country.
