State superintendent candidate Kerr wants DPI positions out of Madison

Deborah Kerr, one of two candidates competing to lead the state Department of Public Instruction, said she would move or rehire most of the agency s over 400 employees  away from Madison and into offices around the state.  “Under DPI’s current model, agency staff are plucked from the Madison area, and that’s not inclusive of any of the diversity and the needs of our Wisconsin children,” Kerr said at a press conference Wednesday in Milwaukee.  Kerr, former superintendent of Brown Deer schools, said she would perform an equity audit of DPI staff and look to hire new staff who live in communities outside of Madison, possibly resulting in terminations of some current employees. Kerr, who lives in Caledonia, would not move to Madison and would work at offices around the state.

State Superintendent Candidates Debate

By Catherine Capellaro - Jan 12th, 2021 09:45 am //end headline wrapper ?>Back to School The seven candidates vying for the post of state superintendent are all hoping to put forth a vision for bringing Wisconsin’s schools out of the chaos of the pandemic and into a more equitable future. It’s a field crowded with teachers, principals, superintendents and policy experts with years of experience and perspective. They all hope to distinguish themselves before voters go to the polls in a Feb. 16 primary. An April 6 general election will determine which of the remaining two contenders will step into Wisconsin’s highest education post, overseeing the state’s more than 2,000 public schools.
