As the pandemic stretches on towards a second year, the appeal of a remote hideaway has never been stronger. We re all keen to get away from our densely populated environments and find a space of our own. And that s where the idea of the bothy comes in. Particularly associated with the Scottish Highlands, but also to be found in other remote parts of Great Britain, a bothy is simply a basic structure used for accommodation by those principally spending their time outdoors. It might be a hut that s left unlocked for hikers wandering through the mountains, or as shelter for workers on large estates. Typically bothies lack amenities - no toilets, no beds, no running water - but of late the term has begun to embrace a slightly more sophisticated sort of accommodation.
