When George Halas died, the Chicago Bears added his initials to their uniform and continue this practice to this day. Recently, we lost Bobby Leonard. He was as beloved by most Hoosiers and had a great or greater an impact on the Indiana Pacers as Halas had on the Bears. Currently, he is being honored by the Pacers with a black bar with Slick incorporated within the bar. This is for the current season only. I ask, why doesn’t the team give him his proper honor and in perpetuity place “Slick” in a stylish font on the front of all of their uniforms, say under the current Nike swoosh? It is Indiana’s team and he was a treasure of Indiana!
CARMEL Dixieland jazz, sounding like a party on the streets of New Orleans, blared as people filled Carmel United Methodist Church. Life as Bobby Slick Leonard knew it was a celebration, a place to do good on earth, love others, lift people up and have fun.
The blanket of snow that had graced Indiana that morning was surely his dad s doing, his son Billy Leonard said.
Beyond Leonard s accolades in basketball and his hall of fame status, he was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a coach and a friend. And he loved to joke.
First, the snow fell in late April the morning of Leonard s funeral and then the lyrics to What a Friend We Have in Jesus, didn t appear on the screen as funeral attendees stood up to sing.

It could be a city park. Or a street. Maybe a school gymnasium. A scholarship program would be fitting.
Whatever the choice, some lasting element of Terre Haute should bear the name of Bobby Leonard. The reason is not merely to heap yet another accolade on a star from the athletic world. Instead, the value of a Bobby Leonard Park or Bobby Leonard Gym would be to remind kids from low-income backgrounds that there is hope for a better life.
A namesake street or scholarship also would remind adults that neighbors can make a difference in a young person s life.
