the suspects climbing down a fire escape finally surrendering at around 1:15 a.m. it all started around 11 p.m. last night. police and s.w.a.t. teams moved in after gunfire reports. then officers heard more shots. they closed down several streets in the area as well as north 101 the central freeway from octavia to eastbound 80. officers were staking out the buildings, guns drawn, for about two hours as people in nearby buildings waited nervously. there were a lot of rounds going off in success, like five to six rounds at a time. the people who were detained were seen climbing on the roof, jumping from building to building that came down the fire escape to the street. reporter: firefighters even joined in this effort to take the gunman down. they brought a ladder truck to help police finally clear the building so they could reopen these roads. back out here live now on bryant street, you re looking at some of the businesses in the area. this is a very busy area. we have

specifically, the two young men that helped them escape a fire. the house, completely destroyed. but their faith, as strong as ever. let s bring in george kiriyama who joins us from the scene. reporter: good evening. you can smell the smoke out here. the inside of this home is charcoal black. you see the chair out on the lawn. but thankfully, the elderly couple who lived here got out safe by, thanks to two, brave men who happened to be passing by. same haley and his wife, think thank two men who came to the rescue, as the thick black smoke surrounded them. the two men were driving around when they saw smoke coming from a neighborhood. when they got to the house, they weren t sure if anybody was inside. so, they yelled. is anybody there? i shouted, call 911. and i heard, deaf as a stone, we already have. and i m sure it was those two gentlemen. we ran to the other side of the house and opened the gated area. and they were standing right there. they were moving really s

after the shooting, the suspect took off in i kr with a woman. the police are trying to identify the pair. they have called in extra resources. officers and those who also work in the crime lab to follow up on leads and also on evidence. we want the community to know that the police department is taking this seriously. we re going to do everything in our power to find the person that s responsible for killing gabriel gabriel. reporter: today in honor of those wkilled in oakland, the mayor says she plans to do more outreach in the neighborhoods affected by violence. the police chief called for people to step up and take responsibility for their community. he also asked for any witnesses of last night s shooting to come forward and for the gunman himself to trn himself in. you can also call police, that s what they want you to do if you saw or heard anything regarding last night s shooting. call them, text them or do either anonymously. live in oakland, nbc bay area news.
