The Mars Exploration summit began with opening remarks from nasa administrator charles bolden, he spoke about the importance of humans becoming a multiplanet species and nasas goal of putting humans on mars in the next two decades. This is 30 minutes. Thank you very much, and thanks to all of you for allowing me to be with you this morning and it kind of kick us off, i hope. I also want to thank explore mars as well as g. W. President steve knapp and scott pace of the g. W. Policy institute for bringing us together for the humans to mars summit. Lets leave that slide up, ill talk about it all day long, and at least you can refer to it and you dont have to look at me. With mars making its closest approach to effort last week and currently appearing as the brightest body in the eastern sky during the month of april, this is an ideal time for this conference, as the red planet draws nearer to earthsort of as im surprised she remembered, maybe im not surprised she remembered, but we did ta
On a space station . Good question. Well, i did go to work for nasa which was a big help for me. I decided being an astronaut was a goal. Really what i also work on was aircraft control systems. Thats where my main work at nasa was on. That could play into working on the shuttle, also helping out. I just got lucky in the selection process. Thats really there are so many qualified people who try to be astronauts. It takes a little bit of luck just to get in. I just happened to get a little lucky. Had all the requirements needed and just a little bit of luck and i made it. So commander, in about 30 seconds tell us about the best experience youve had onboard the space station itself. Well, the best experience is, well always looking out window and the best way to look out the window is not having a window in front of you, thats going on a spacewalk. Thats probably the best experience. Its a fantastic feeling. It is a little pressure on you at the same time but, boy, its quite an experienc
Global economy actually means and i think thats a good place to start. Certainly as we create new processes with dealing with harsh environments, that brings us to have a skill we didnt have before. Thats one way to enhance competitiveness, assume iing th other thing, it forces us to think of ways to make things more Cost Effective in a constrained environment. That, by its nature, is forcing a number of companies now to look at their manufacturing processes, their development processes. As we talked about with stem, having a mission like this, and the many step it is takes to make this mission real, if we do our jobs right and we provide that inspiration of what this is, that will draw people, new people into our companies, you know. And that enhances by rejuvenating, and bringing a different mindset. As ken said we tend to have an older workforce right now. Infusing that workforce with a number of, you know, large percentage of just out of college. That will change the face of many o
Official is someone who is either elected or appointed by their party and runs for office as the candidate for their party or is appointed by someone who was elected as a candidate of their party. That is to say, the chief election official in most states is in that sense a partisan. This creates an inherent conflict of interest between the chief Election Officials responsibility to serve the interests of all voters to create a level Playing Field and that officials interest in serving his or her party and advancing through the ranks of his or her party. It is a problem that is, by the way, well recognized among other democratic countries, which is why the chief Election Authority in most countries enjoys some degree of insulation from partisan politics. This, however, is unfortunately a lesson that we in the United States have yet to learn. Next let me give a little bit of historical context. For most of this countrys history, racial minorities, most notably africanamericans, have bee
Way. Whereas the house of representatives may have about 40 or 50 members that are predominantly Food Production represents Food Production districts. Every United States senator represents at least some Food Production. That includes from the smallest states of rhode island and delaware to, of course, the largest states. And historically, those interests were dominated from people by the midwest and the heartland states. So illinois, indiana, missouri, my own state of kansas. And the midwest, up through the dakotas. And states in the south where you had members of congress and especially members of the United States who were elected forever. They accumulated great amounts of power, and they were able to influence the political process rather significantly so the states of mississippi, which was one state that had accumulated a large amount of power over the years. But all of the southern states, georgia, south carolina, north carolina, called the southern crops had very, very powerful
