Loads of pre Super Bowl stuff
Photo by Fred Roe/Getty Images After the debacle of the Heidi game the Jets didn’t lose another game the rest of the year. They won their division for the first time in franchise history, then were set to play in the AFL championship game against the Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders were always the bad guys who liked to cheat or get away with whatever they could. They would revel in the pain of other teams and would try anything to gain an advantage. When Al Davis was coach (by the time of the championship game he was AFL commissioner) he tried one of their sinister machinations.

The Jets sans Sonny plus the Heidi game

Lillis and Hess were the driving force behind forcing Sonny out or buying him out. The Jets you see were becoming very successful on the field and in attendance, yet showed no profit. The group felt like a bonanza was on the horizon with the AFL/NFL merger just a few years away. They wanted to both reap the financial rewards of that event and be removed from the overspending Sonny was planning.
