Bad concepts, non-starters, ahead-of-their-time fiascos Las Vegas has had its share
In the fall of 1989, amid widespread coverage of the impending opening of Steve Wynn’s $640 million Mirage, students in Columbia University’s graduate program in history approached a colleague of theirs and asked, as a Las Vegan, what he thought of it. His reply: “Nobody is going to pay $125 to see Siegfried and Roy.”
Happily for Las Vegas, that supposed expert was wrong. From the volcano in front to the white tiger habitat and tropical rain forest motif, Wynn’s 3,000-plus-room resort proved to be an enormous success. Locals and tourists poured in and spent money, and the megaresort era was underway.

Circa’s Legacy Club

If the cavernous, energetic sportsbook and rooftop pool are the centerpieces of the new Circa Resort and Casino, its Legacy Club, set to debut on December 28, is an elevated escape from all the action.
Perched atop the 458-foot hotel tower that also opens for the first time this week, the luxurious lounge marks a completely different direction for Downtown nightlife while fitting neatly into the newly established Circa brand.
“I think it’s hard to compare, because there definitely is nothing like this Downtown,” says Alice O’Keefe, Circa’s director of design and architecture. “When we developed the concept, we looked around Las Vegas but also outside Las Vegas, because it was important to create a destination.
