Second home owner Dave Hinns had asked Pembrokeshire County Council whether it would consider a rebate “to those unfortunate to be caught in this position” after the Covid-19 pandemic meant he could not make a home bought in Pembroke in 2018 for retirement his “primary” home in early 2020.
Cabinet member for finance Cll Bob Kilmister at Monday, April 19 meeting Evidence about second home ownership in Pembrokeshire is to be gathered before a public consultation on upping council tax premiums is launched. There has been a push to increase the premium on second homes – currently 50 per cent – to reduce the impact on communities across the county as house and rent prices continue to rise and price locals out of the area. Cabinet member for housing Cllr Michelle Bateman said on Monday (April 19) said there was a “housing crisis” with around 1,000 people joining the council waiting list in the last year, combined with increasing rents and unaffordable house prices.

Council tax The council has £7.5million in reserves but using it to prop-up services would be a financial risk and move pressures into coming years, a committee was told as it recommended a lower council tax rise than proposed. Corporate overview and scrutiny is the third committee to not give its support to five per cent council tax rise, calling for a lower increase to be considered. Only the social care overview and scrutiny committee has given its support to the recommendation of five per cent. The predicted funding gap of £25million is reduced to £14.5million, with Pembrokeshire’s provisional AEF for 2021-22 £179,387,000, nearly £7million more than last year.
