City of Sarasota votes to resurrect mask mandate

City of Sarasota votes to resurrect mask mandate Timothy Fanning, Sarasota Herald-Tribune Replay Video SARASOTA – The third time was, indeed, a charm for mandatory masks in the city of Sarasota.   After failing twice to resurrect the city’s emergency mask ordinance since commissioners allowed it to sunset on Feb. 25, a majority of commissioners on Monday night voted 3-2 to begin the process of reinstating it. © THOMAS BENDER/HERALD-TRIBUNE FILE In keeping with city ordinance, masks were required when the Sarasota Farmers Market reopened in August. The Sarasota City Commission has since let the mandate lapse, and an attempt to revive it on Monday failed.

City of Sarasota begins process of reinstating mandatory masks

The decision comes as City Manager Marlon Brown said he will not enforce the mask mandate.  The motion was to ask the city attorney to craft the ordinance. In order for it to become law, city commissioners need to approve an ordinance two more times.   City Attorney Bob Fournier intends to have the ordinance prepared for its first reading in May.  Commissioners Jen Ahearn-Koch, Liz Alpert and Kyle Battie were in support. Mayor Hagen Brody and Vice Mayor Erik Arroyo were against it.  This story is developing and will be updated.   Timothy Fanning covers Sarasota government for the Herald-Tribune. Report: I m city council; I do what I want, Kyle Battie says before fight

“I’m city council; I do what I want.”  These are the words attributed to Commissioner Kyle Battie by the Sarasota Police Department just before he was knocked unconscious during a fight outside of a restaurant in downtown Sarasota on Christmas Eve. The quotes are from written comments to police by James Destasio, 30, whom police say struck Battie in the face Dec. 24. They were initially partially redacted in a report after an investigation by the Sarasota Police Department.  The report redacted Battie’s name and the quotes attributed to him. Sarasota police also initially attempted to blur Battie’s face from security footage captured inside Cafe Epicure.
