The Back Nine comes at you after a perfect day for The 26th Bob Dooley Invitational and a nice day for baseball that followed except for the lack of clutch hitting. Sorry there was no Front Nine last week, but the tournament kind of took precedent.
10. I feel like I just won an Oscar because there are so many people to thank and I know I’ll forget some. Over the past few years I have studied the month of May and decided that weather-wise it seemed like the perfect month for our tournament. And then it turned out to be just that. I was not sure what the day itself would be like in terms of participation and people just cutting loose, but they certainly did. Pink Flamingo Diner, Alex Wesly Construction, The Tailgate Guys, Tower Hill Insurance, Wahoo, GCM, Florida Food Services, Big Mill’s,TDC Entertainment, Florida Credit Union, Carr, Riggs and Ingram, Burkhardt Sales and Service, Ballyhoo and, of course, out two title sponsors – Titan MRI and Leonardo’s at Millhopper – and,
That’s it. That’s the list. For now.
4. Florida’s opening game of the Kentucky series was a microcosm of this season in that the Gators fell behind, rallied to tie it, blew a chance to take the lead and then kicked away the game with a crucial error. I’ve seen this movie before. If the Gators are not careful, they are going to blow a chance to at least have the regionals at home. Forget Super Regionals. There is something missing with this team that I have a difficult time putting my finger on. And yet, every time I’m ready to give up on them, they do something to bring me back. Still, this has been a weird season.
The Back Nine comes at you after another weekend on the road and some and, yes, I feel pampered. And poor. Now it’s time to pour myself into the 26th Bob Dooley Invitational (May 15).
10. So, the NFL Draft finally is over and the SEC once again flexed its muscles setting a record for the most players ever drafted. And it’s not as if we went to 10 rounds like the old days that anyone would catch up. The SEC is America’s League and everyone else is living in it. It’s where the most elite players want to play because they know this league is the smoothest route to the NFL. And the Florida Gators were happy they could be a big part of it. Every school in the conference had at least one player drafted and it’s not like this is a conference with nine teams or something. When you have eight players drafted and you are only third in your conference and fifth in the country in number of players taken, well, it kind of feels like recruiting season.
The Back Nine comes at you in a bit of a panic because it is only three weeks until the 26thBob Dooley Invitational and I’m starting to freak out. This is, of course, an annual occurrence.
1. Because we live in football town (and remind me to tell you about the shirt I once bought in Athens), we’ll start with the news that the SEC Network is going to show the two-hour Inside the Gators special Monday at 9 p.m. This is a replacement for having a spring game, which couldn’t be played because the Swamp was being used for vaccinations and golf balls falling from the sky. The truth is that you will enjoy this special more than you would have a spring game and I don’t even have to see it to know that. I agree that having a spring game on TV can help in recruiting but it’s a good thing they are not recruiting me because I haven’t watched a second of any of them. Mostly, they are for the fans and provide content for the SEC Network, which you will realize when you are flipping i
