conservationists fear more birds could be lost. it s still early in the migration season. just a few days into it, but already some ducks, like the blue-winged teal, have arrived here from the dakotas. conservationists estimate during the next six months more than 25 million birds will migrate through coastal louisiana. what are your concerns about the birds going into the gulf of mexico? what makes you worry the most? our biggest concern is what kind of food resources they re going to find there. reporter: so biologist bob dew and his team at ducks unlimited have partnered with the u.s. department of agriculture which is paying landowners in eight states as much as $20 million to turn idle farmland into clean habitats for birds. dew s group hopes to sidetrack migrating birds by transforming 40 n 0 40,000 acres in southern louisiana. he brought us to this rice field which has been pumped full of water and turned into a mud flap
