The evidentiary phase of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s trial on charges of fraud, bribery and breach of trust began on Monday, after a number of delays.
Prosecutor Liat Ben-Ari delivered a much-anticipated opening statement when the trial started at the Jerusalem District Court, followed by testimony by Ilan Yeshua, the former CEO of the Walla News site and the key witness in the first case of three cases to be heard.
Yeshua, the first witness, is testifying on the claims that Walla gave favorable coverage to Netanyahu at the request of Walla owner Shaul Elovitch. The latter, who was the controlling shareholder of the telecommunications giant Bezeq, is accused of bribing the prime minister, which, according to the indictment against Netanyahu and Elovitch, he did in exchange for regulatory benefits the prime minister gave Bezeq when he was communications minister.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must attend the opening session of the evidence phase of his corruption trial on Monday, a Jerusalem District Court judge said Thursday.
Earlier on Thursday, prosecutors from Israel s State Prosecutor s Office informed the Jerusalem District Court that they required Netanyahu s presence following appeals by the prime minister s attorneys to exempt him from compulsory presence at his trial hearings.
With regard to his presence at future sessions, prosecutors said they would leave that up to the discretion of the court.
Netanyahu has been charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in three cases.

Documents submitted by David Shimron – a close associate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his personal attorney – reveal that Shimron had much wider business dealings than previously known with Michael Ganor, a central figure in Case 3000.
Shimron submitted the documents to investigators in order to prove that he only acted as Ganor’s lawyer, not his business partner, in the state’s $1.5 billion purchase of submarines and patrol boats from German industrial group ThyssenKrupp. The transactions are at the heart of an alleged massive bribery scheme known as 3000. The documents helped get the main accusations against Shimron dropped.
