humanitarian side. jon: from a personal standpoint, you commanded a sister ship to one of those that s out there now. as a commander if you have to give the order for something like this, you know, boarding an intradiction, how much of a white knuckle time is that for someone like you? it s pretty professional. we train to it. if we look at our particular procedures, all the ships out there in particular this cruiser has a helicopter detachment. we do have a lot with helicopters. we do a lot with bridge to bridge in terms of talking about a boarding procedure. you would see the helicopters up everyone on a particular vessel of interest you know come to the forward part of the ship. then you would have a boarding team. we ve got 50 caliber, our surface to surface capabilities there and ready to basically respond in kind in order to
no word telling the community how he felt about this. the the honesty comes from my heart. reporter: what do we know about slager? he worked as a waiter then joined the coast guard. he was part of a boarding team. he did port security, then joined the north charleston police force. his record fairly clean. there was a complaint of use of force after he tasered an individual and wrestles him to the ground. he s proficient with a taser and passed all his coast guard

going around parts of the pacific. initially on this trip leaving from the india from the western port of mumbai there had been part of a rally as it were a group of vessels sailing together for safety. at some point they left that group of vessels to go on their own and that could have caused them to be even more vulnerable. i just want to play a bit of sound here from a vice admiral with the u.s. he described what happened when those u.s. navy special ops forces arrived on that boat. there were no gunshots fired from the boarding team as they boarded. none. and then as they were clearing the vessel, they did kill one pirate as they were clearing it and then there was another pirate that was killed in a knife fight. reporter: suzanne, some audio there from a press conference by central command, so certainly the navy is trying to indicate
cencom. somehow that broke down and early in the morning shots were ringing out from the s/v quest. they sent officials to find out what happened. there were no gunshots fired from the boarding team as they boarded. none. and then as they were clearing the vessel, they did kill one pirate as they were clearing it and then there was another pirate that was killed in a knife fight. reporter: the navy personnel gave emergency first aid, but they were unable to revive the four sailors. a very tragic end to this hostage drama. there are around 700 sailors still held off the coast of somalia by pirates. this problem seems not to going away anytime soon. as david mentioned, it s an issue that s not going away. the threat of pirates very real and deadly. but still when it hits home and a loved one dies in one of those attacks, it s difficult to believe. the loss can be overwhelming. a little earlier today, the
