South African police and Cape Town Law Enforcement officers fired stun grenades at residents of a neighbourhood who tried to prevent a crane from entering the area. The residents of Bo Kaap have clashed with a local development company which is building high-rise apartments in the historic neighbourhood. The area was known as the Malay Slave Quarter during colonial times as it was home to slaves that were brought to South Africa from Malaysia, Java and Indonesia. Residents want the area preserved as a national heritage site. After police fired stun grenades, the developers' crane entered the area, but it struggled to climb the hill and had to eventually be towed. The crane then left the area to cheers from the residents. The property developer, Block Development, recently sought to prevent local housing activists from protesting in the area.

Refilwe Moloto speaks to Soraya Booley of Sustainable Bo Kaap who say they have been locked out of a garden they started to help feed the community. The landowners however say the group has no right to be there and the site is not abandoned and is earmarked for development.
Booley explains that the non-profit organisation Sustainable Bo-Kaap began the garden in July 2020.
It was at the height of the lockdown when our community was really suffering from the economic impact of the lockdown.
By little reckoning, we welcome 2021 as optimists, and perhaps, pent-up travelers.
This forecast may rely on the fortitude brought forth by the ongoing pandemic and the fast recuperation of the travel industry, but the mood seems only foreseeable with the last-minute help of Pantone Color of the Year. Or, should we say colors?
Now, we have two for 2021: According to the company, the bright yellow shade Illuminating evokes an “optimistic promise of a sunshine-filled day,” while Ultimate Gray represents “composure, steadiness, and resilience,” confuting its dull shade as the undertow, or merely a grain of salt.
Marking Decembers with its annual hue selection for next year’s commercial trends, Pantone didn’t look any further than the sun shining on weathered concretes, road lane markings, or train stations in the mundane outdoors to make sense of our concurrent landscape and echo a social statement.
