Research station rises on Penobscot Bay island
The $1 million facility by the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership will be the first offshore research facility in Penobscot Bay and only the second in the entire Gulf of Maine.

For over 40 years, starting in 1870, the island was home to a bustling community of European stonecutters and American miners who quarried granite for use in some of America’s most iconic structures.
