MAJOR investment to the tune of £2.6 billion and prospect of 3,000 jobs for Northumberland will be a huge economic boost for the area. That s the verdict of Coun. Glen Sanderson, the leader of Northumberland County Council, after Britishvolt, which specialises in battery technologies, selected Cambois as the site of the UK’s first gigaplant for electric vehicle batteries. It follows Prime Minister Boris Johnson s visit to the site, near Blyth, on Friday. Britishvolt aims to begin construction on the former Power Station site in Summer 2021 and begin production of lithium-ion batteries by the end of 2023.

Global construction specialist ISG has been appointed to lead the build of the £2.6 billion project located at Blyth, Northermberland.
Construction will start in the second half of 2021 and once the plant is up and running it will produce lithium-ion batteries for the automotive and renewable energy industries at the end of 2023.
Construction of further phases will continue until the end of 2027.
The Blyth gigaplant is located 20 miles north of Nissan s Sunderland factory, which makes the Leaf EV.

The start-up behind a multibillion-pound plan to open a battery âgigafactoryâ in Northumberland has appointed a company to build the plant.
Battery technology investor Britishvolt last week announced it hopes to invest £2.6bn in the UKâs first âgigaplantâ to manufacture electric car batteries, having selected Blyth as the site for the factory.
ISG has been appointed to lead construction on the UK’s first battery gigaplant.
The £2.6bn new Britishvolt gigaplant will be sited in Blyth, Northumberland, with construction planned to commence in summer 2021.
Blyth Power Station is the new site for the battery plant
The construction cost is yet to be confirmed.
A former RAF site in South Wales had previously been touted to be the likely location for the project with Britishvolt signing a memorandum of understanding with the Welsh government in July.
But late last week revealed it had acquired exclusive rights to the former the site of the Blyth Power Station.
