Phil Brown sealed his passage back to the Shrimpers last Friday, succeeding Mark Molesley. Brown enjoyed a five-year spell with Blues during his initial spell at the helm, in which time Southend made two trips to Wembley. While the first journey was not so fruitful, as the Shrimpers lost in the 2013 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final, Brown led Blues to promotion thanks to a penalty shoot-out win over Wycombe Wanderers in 2015. That win saw Southend reach League One, but they now find themselves in League Two and at risk of dropping into non-league football. Here, we have looked back at the highs and lows of Brown’s first spell in charge.
