expansion plan in the works. more resources and expanded area and maybe even some fresh eyes. reporter: that s right. today australian authorities putting out a statement sort of responding to some of those questions about what next. what happens when and if they actually end up ruling out the current search area which is their best guess as to where the black box may be. and they are saying now that the bluefin-21 will start searching some of the adjacent areas. no mention of any additional submersibles being added to the mix. something here people are wondering about considering there are more powerful submersibles out there. it can go a mile deeper into the ocean and stay out there for weeks on end. we asked that question. so far we don t get any answer. we know it s something malaysian and australian officials are discussing. we want to talk to you about
at this moment, we re waiting to hear that the bluefin-21 has completed this phase of the search for flight 370. as you just heard from our michael holmes in perth, word is expected any minute and we ll bring that to you when it happens. there is a lot to talk about with our panel, back tonight, richard quest, let s also bring in cnn analyst, david souci, author of why planes crash. also cnn analyst david gallo director of special projects at woods hole oceanographic institute. and former transportation executive mary schiavo, who currently investigates accidents for families. all right, richard, i want to talk about this interview he just did. mary, let me start with you here. because richard pressed the
ship, of course, being towed. it doesn t have to resurface like the bluefin. and also has much more ability to be deeper. we expect to learn much more about that in the days ahead. we appreciate it. let s turn to ivan now in beijing. what was the emotional ride like for the families there today? reporter: well, you know, we asked one woman, for example, what she thought about this object of interest. and was she disappointed when it turned out that it did not belong to the plane. and she said no, i don t believe in any of the information that they put out anymore. and i think that underscores the suspicion that many of these families have about the investigation, about the search. about the information that they re being fed. there is a great deal of suspicion and doubt coming from many of these families that i talked to. another poignant note is that this woman just recently posted a photo of herself with her missing husband, one of the passengers, both of them wearing
expansion. the bluefin, you know, it gave its best shot, but it s not enough. there are parts of the search area that it cannot reach. it s too deep. and, of course, we need additional resources because the bluefin turned up nothing. so what they re going to have to do is bring in some of the deeper descending autonomous underwater vehicles. they have sight scan sonar, and each of those vehicles needs a support ship. there s needing to be more crew. i think they re planning an expedition or a search party for months, not years. i think they ll expand a mapping area with additional underwater vehicles and see what they can cover in the next few months, not in the next few years. jeff, we ll bring you in in just a minute. i want to ask mary one more question. we have learned that sarah bajc, the partner of one of the people on flight 370, so fed up with malaysian officials right now that she and others want to take
welcome back. breaking news, the bluefin 21 has nearly completed its 12th mission, 90% of the search zone scanned. and yet another deadend when sheet metal with rivets washed ashore has been ruled out as debris from this plane. it raises the question, is it time to rethink the search vat gee? jean casaras has more now. australia will not rest until we have done everything we humanly can to get to the bottom of this mystery. reporter: it is a mystery no closer to being solved. the bluefin 21 autonomous underwater vehicle has searched the targeted area with no luck. experts are preparing for the next phase of the recovery effort. this requires deep sea ascents. this requires more probably bluefin 21s. this requires probably
