Charley Hill: a natural for covert work in the art world

Charles Hill, the art detective, aided the recovery of many priceless objects in an adventurous career both with the Metropolitan Police and as a freelance investigator, most sensationally Edvard Munch’s The Scream and Titian’s Rest on the Flight to Egypt.
A former soldier and aspirant priest, Hill gave up sword and cassock in favour of dagger and cloak. With a passion for art and a flair for theatrics, he was a plain-clothes man who could talk to academics and the criminal fraternity on equal terms.
It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood heist film. Two thieves break into a major art gallery and steal a painting worth £40million in less than a minute. Showing off, they leave behind a note at the scene that reads: Thanks for the poor security.
Local authorities, Norwegian in this case, seek help from their British counterparts and the investigation is assigned to an unassuming Cambridge-born history graduate who goes undercover as a US art dealer to recover the stolen painting.
Only this isn t the plot of a summer blockbuster, but the real-life story of the 1994 theft of Edvard Munch s The Scream, which was taken from Oslo s National Museum.

Pauline Chamberlain, who has died aged 88 after contracting Covid-19 in hospital, was an extra extraordinaire who gained something of a cult following among movie buffs through her numerous film appearances in non-speaking roles, after leaving behind her days as a dancer with her twin sister in the Bluebell Girls.
