stop and within minutes the suspect opened fire shooting the officer several times. the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest that likely saved his life. he remains in serious condition but is expected to survive. the only description so far of the shooter is he s a heavy set white male wearing a blue shirt. he and his passenger fled the scene. police are going door to door in central phoenix looking for any information. the suspect vehicle, a 1997 fort thunder bird was found abandoned a few hours after the shooting. police won t say if weapons or ammo was found inside, but the suspect is thought to be armed. there is no information linking this morning shooting to the series of shootings at vehicles over the past two weeks along interstate 10 in central phoenix. the family members of the illinois police officer shot and killed two weeks ago they are furious at the suggestion he may have taken his own life.
30. p.m. after deputies are alerted to a carjacking. taking law enforcement through jurisdictions hijacking another car along the way. after he leaves a freeway, california highway patrol pulls what s called a pit maneuver. sending the car careening into a vehicle and ultimately stopping the car. it looks like a pit. whoa. but the man isn t done. there he is. suspect. he has the the gun in his hand. shooting in the air. suspect is running with that weapon in his hand. reporter: the suspect takes cover in the barbecue restaurant reportedly filled with 80 people. he ran inside this chris and pits. just imagine what kind of panic is going on inside that restaurant right now. i see a guy, blue shirt, bald, rush in. very paniced. agitated. rushes in. rushes to the to go box where i am working. points a gun at me demand for water. i need water.
he takes off on foot and with a handgun fires off a shot. he s running no more than maybe ten feet from me. i thought he shot somebody, took off, and an officer took off and chased him. i was getting ready to dig a hole. reporter: the suspect takes recover in this restaurant reportedly filled with about 80 people. he ended up grabbing one of our managers. he was really afraid. he was holding a hostage. a guy, blue shirt, bald just rushed in, very panicked, very, very seemed agitated, rushes in and rushes straight to my to-go box where i m working, and he points a gun and demands water. he s like, give me water.
person in, and this is the third person you re seeing standing there in a blue shirt, who has been arrested. as i told you, don, earlier, there were some people who said, we are definitely most people i should say we are definitely going to follow this will rule, we re going to go home when the curfew was put in place. we are not going to defy it. too many people as one protester put it, too many of us go to jail. there s no reason to go to jail now. but there were others who felt like it was their constitutional right to be out in the streets, that they are grown-ups and they have every right to be here, and so they decided to stay. unfortunately at one point a glass bottle came towards police. police also faced with a few water bottles that come at them, and this person was in the street after 10:00. the second person was in the street after 10:00. the third person, same thing. they got hauled in. and here he is leaving now on a stretcher, restrained, we should note. and you ca
