A statue now stands at the Jupiter Inlet, commissioned by the family of one of two boys lost at sea nearly six years ago.
Saturday will mark the anniversary of the disappearance of Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen, two 14-year old friends who set sail for a fishing trip from the Inlet on July 24, 2015 and never returned.
Their boat was found near Bermuda the following year.
The
Austin s father, Blu Stephanos, was on hand.
“This statue is really a big gratitude from us, saying thank you for lifting us up in our time of need, when we were just lost and we didn’t know what to do.”
Stephanos family commissioned the statue, which is intended to serve as a memorial for all those lost at sea and provide their loved ones with a place to visit and pay remembrance.
It is life-sized and was created by West Palm Beach firm Robert St. Croix Sculpture Studio & Foundry. It doesn t feature either Austin or Perry. This statue represents all of us. All of you, Blu Stephanos told the crowd gathered to see it unveiled.
Stephanos told The Palm Beach Post on Wednesday that he wanted the statue to be a monument to his gratitude to the Jupiter-Tequesta community for supporting his family in the years after his son s disappearance.
