COVID-19 cut patient-care revenue but drove a rebound in income from insurance coverage last year at Bloomington-based HealthPartners, with the crosscurrents netting out to stronger earnings overall.
Clinics operated by the Bloomington-based nonprofit group saw a significant revenue decline last year as well as losses stemming from the government shut down of our medical and clinic operations due to COVID-19, according to a regulatory filing. Hospitals and clinics were subject to a government order designed to preserve resources last spring for an expected surge in COVID-19 patients.

Declines in COVID-19 hospitalizations and Minnesota s reported test positivity rate offered hope Wednesday that a third pandemic wave in the state is peaking.
Both key benchmarks of pandemic activity had been steadily increasing since early March, with the positivity rate rising from 3.4% on March 2 to 7.4% on April 11 before falling back slightly to 7.3%. The 676 COVID-19 cases in Minnesota hospital inpatient beds on Tuesday also tripled the recent low of 210 on March 6. That number declined slightly from 686 on Monday.
The COVID-19 pandemic has taxed the capabilities and capacities of health care providers across the U.S. It has also made some consumers less willing to seek routine or elective care, due to their fear of the virus. However, the health care real estate market has remained strong in the Twin Cities, according to market stakeholders.
“Historically, health care had been so resistant to the ups and downs of the economy,” said Jill Rasmussen, a principal with the Minneapolis-based Davis Group. “But, with COVID, there have been challenges with some specialty groups,” including reduced activity at clinics and hospitals. “But the specialty groups are probably back to 95% to 100% of their pre-COVID volumes,” Rasmussen said.

The positivity rate of diagnostic testing for COVID-19 has dipped back below Minnesota s warning threshold a sign of progress amid continued efforts to vaccinate residents against the infectious disease.
The rate dropped to 4.9% on Minnesota s response dashboard, a decline from 15.5% on Nov. 10 amid a second wave of the pandemic that has now caused 6,140 deaths and 458,633 known infections. The state totals include 16 deaths reported Thursday and 1,335 infections with the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.
