In my tenacious quest to defy the onslaught of age, I often bicycle throughout southeastern Connecticut. Sometimes I head to Connecticut College for a therapeutic rendezvous with youth.
However, in order to reach such enlightenment, I must travel the spookily named Gallows Lane off Bloomingdale Road in Waterford. Gallows Lane has an aura, due either to its name, its ghostly emptiness, or my imagination. The clicking of my bicycle’s drive train, normally dim, suddenly seems intrusively loud in the strange stillness.
I’ve pedaled it many times, sensing the eery chill of a dark past, fighting the urge to change gears and flee. I unavoidably consider the origin of its name every time.

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The eastbound lanes of Interstate 16 are closed near the Bloomingdale Road exit, according to the Chatham Emergency Management Agency.
Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route.

Vernon County Man Injured in Accident
A single-vehicle crash occurred Friday afternoon, December 18, 2020 at approximately 2:15 PM, in the town of Webster. Donald L. Bell, age 33, of rural La Farge, WI was operating a Chrysler Sebring convertible northbound on Salem Ridge Road. The vehicle crested a knoll just south of the 4-way intersection with East Salem Ridge Road, Smart Hollow Road, and Bloomingdale Road. The vehicle continued straight onto Bloomingdale Road and met an oncoming, southbound vehicle in the intersection. Bell reported steering slightly and lost control. The vehicle spun around and went off the right (east) side of the roadway. The vehicle traveled down an embankment, struck a fence, and overturned also striking a tree. The vehicle came to rest upright. Bell was wearing a seatbelt and sustained only minor injuries. Bell was transported by La Farge Ambulance to Vernon Memorial Healthcare, in Viroqua, WI where he was treated and released. Assisting at the scene were
ROGERSVILLE â The gunman who kidnapped a Mount Carmel woman in 2017 and used her as bait to lure out a shooting victim in Bloomingdale was sentenced to six years last week in Hawkins County Criminal Court.
That brings the total amount of time that Jarrett Cole âShroomâ Heitmann is now serving up to 24 years.
Heitmann, 28, of Bristol, Tennessee, pleaded guilty in federal court in 2018 to unrelated marijuana trafficking charges in exchange for a 10-year sentence.
This past Feb. 14, Heitmann pleaded guilty in Sullivan County Criminal Court to attempted second-degree murder and kidnapping in exchange for an eight-year sentence, which must be consecutive to the federal time. The six-year sentence handed down Dec. 11 by Judge John Dugger is to be served consecutive to those other two sentences.
