A case of hijacking has been registered for further investigation after the 41-year-old manager of Mangaung Metro Solid Waste was allegedly hijacked during the shutdown protest.
Sazly Hartzenberg from Bloemfontein Courant reports this comes after a photo of a burning vehicle was making the rounds this morning. According to Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, this was the vehicle of the 41-year-old manager of Mangaung Metro Solid Waste.
Makhele said the manager was driving along MacKenzie Street in Heidedal on his way to work when he was stopped by a white bakkie with registration number JKL 673 NW.
Three males from the bakkie then approached the manager in his vehicle and one pointed him with a firearm and instructed him to get out of the vehicle. âThey then drove away with his BMW and after a few minutes the vehicle was recovered burnt at MacKenzie Street.â

In the past few months, members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Welkom have noticed an increase in street robberies across the city. This is according to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele.
Bloemfontein Courant reports in one incident, a 19-year-old resident was robbed by two unknown males. âThe complainant was walking alone in Toronto Road when he was robbed by two males. One of the suspects came from the front and the other one from behind. After theyâve robbed him of a Samsung Galaxy A51 cell phone, they fled the scene,â said Makhele.
The identity of one of the suspects was obtained by Detective Sergeant Tsie Matlokotsi. The suspect is described as an English-speaking African male of foreign nationality, aged between 25 and 30, has a dark complexion, muscular weight, a shaven head, dark to medium eye colour, and is about 1.7 meters in height.

In a statement, Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale confirmed that the investigating unit had raided the offices in an effort to retrieve documents relating to the matter.

“This morning the serious corruption investigation in the Buffalo City Municipality conducted a search and seizure operation at the municipal offices where there are allegations of corruption in of an estimated R30 million earmarked for Covid-19 food vouchers.”
Mogale said officers confiscated documents and electronic equipment which contained information to further the investigation.
“The allegations are that supply chain processes were flouted by the supply chain manager with 18 service providers in the procurement of food vouchers for Covid 19. The investigation continues.”
