Block Island police chief to retire

NEW SHOREHAM  Block Island Police Chief Vincent T. Carlone plans to retire after 17 years leading the island’s force. “It’s time to move on and do better things. Forty years of doing anything is enough,” Carlone, 59, said. Carlone joined the Block Island Police Department as a sergeant in 2003 after retiring as a lieutenant from the Narragansett Police Department. Carlone served as commander of the detective division and supervisor of the patrol division during his 22 years in Narragansett. He took over as Block Island chief in 2004. Carlone, who has homes on Block Island and in Narragansett, said he looks forward to not worrying 24-7 about the island and its residents and to assuming a more private life. He plans to dedicate more time to spearfishing, playing guitar and practicing martial arts.
