The eighties were the heyday of the buddy cop movie. The year before LETHAL WEAPON came out and make the genre even more popular, Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines were Chicago cops on the trail of a drug lord (played by Jimmy Smits) in RUNNING SCARED 1986 by director Peter Hyams (2010, CAPRICORN ONE, TIMECOP). While a solid box office hit (there was even talk of a sequel), in the decades that followed RUNNING SCARED would become somewhat obscure. That s too bad as it s a really good cop comedy/action flick, with some terrific set pieces, including an amazing chase along Chicago s EL tracks. And Billy Crystal as an action hero? Who knew? The Disney-produced Star Wars sequels had a great start with the smash box-office success of J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens in 2015, then the wildly divisive follow-up The Last Jedi - written and directed by Rian Johnson - a couple year later. However, it all crashed and burned with universally maligned The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, directed again by TFA s J.J. Abrams.
But did it have to be that way? As many fans know, filmmaker Colin Trevorrow was hired to co-write and direct STAR WARS EPISODE 9 at the same time the Abrams and Johnson were hired to direct their respective films. However, obviously things didn t go to plan. So what did Trevorrow s Episode IX look like? Would it have been an improvement on Abrams failure? When I visited the set of Justice League, way back in 2016, I had no idea what a rocky road this film was facing. I vividly remember visiting the London soundstage where it was being shot, meeting the cast, and chatting with director Zack Snyder about his epic vision for what DC hoped would be their answer to The Avengers. Little did I know their obsession with making it EXACTLY like The Avengers would lead to Snyder’s eventual dismissal from the project, with Joss Whedon being brought in to finish the film, which eventually came out in the fall of 2017 to terrible reviews and middling box office.
