DELE OGUNYEMI writes that the abduction of two female schoolteachers in the Ohorhe community, Delta State, and their freedom after 10 days in the kidnappers’ den highlight the need for better security arrangement in the state, especially in the rural areas
“God’s mercy kept us in the kidnappers’ den for 10 days and we came out safe and unharmed. We were not beaten, chained or raped. Rather, we were shown love and compassion in the thick forest. One of them told us that he saw mercy written on our foreheads; that we are women of grace.
“They begged us for forgiveness and even gave us money when we were released. The God of Daniel was with us. We serve a God who is too faithful to fail. Thank you all for your prayers and concern. We are indeed grateful to God as He answered our prayers. We love you all.”
The body threatened to go on strike if attacks on schools is not halted.
“In light of these recent developments, the Nigeria Union of Teachers may be compelled to down tools pending when it is safe for our members to teach and guide our pupils and students without fear of abduction by these faceless enemies of educational prosperity of the Nigerian Nation,” the statement said.
The teachers’ body maintained that the recent condemnable events of bandits’ attack on schools, if not immediately addressed, will largely affect the 2019/2020 academic calendar, which has already been disrupted by the six month long lock down caused by the COVID- 19 pandemic.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike following a continued threat to the lives of its members and students.

Katsina abduction: NUT threatens strike over insecurity in schools
Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), has expressed concerns over rising insecurity in schools following the recent abduction of over 300 students from Government Science Secondary School Kankara, katsina State.
To this end, the Union has threatened to down tools (strike) to register its discontent with the poor security situations in schools, and to also reawaken the consciousness of the Federal Government to the poor security situation in schools.
NUT Secretary General, Dr. Mike Ene, in a statement released in Abuja, on Tuesday, said the decision to abandon the classrooms has become necessary following unending threat to the lives of school children and their teachers.
