Ratatouille the TikTok musical
Has the most significant American musical of the year already happened? The word “phenomenon” is used with giddy abandon about cultural happenings, but it has a tang of truth in the case of Ratatouille the musical – or Ratatousical, as some are calling it.
Based on the much-loved 2007 Pixar/Disney animated feature – about a sensitive, morsel-savouring rat called Remy who develops a rare culinary aptitude (thereafter taking the world of Parisian haute cuisine by storm) – it landed on New Year’s Day for a 72-hour window of streaming opportunity. Such was the demand to see it that this “concert” benefit premiere has raised more than $1m for actors and behind-the-scenes workers (via the Actors Fund).

The Ratatouille musical on TikTok, also known as Ratatousical, debuted online on New Year s Day. Although a lot of people were reluctant about the project, it has been reported that the musical has now sold more than $1 million tickets in just two days, making it as one of the best news of 2021.
A portion of the ticket sales of the musical will benefit The Actors Fund, which supports the performers and the workers in the entertainment industry who are struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A standout moment of the 2007 movie “Ratatouille,” about a rat who teams with a human to achieve his culinary dreams, comes when cynical restaurant critic Anton Ego is served the titular food. Though he’s initially confused by the offering in a former five-star eatery one chef calls the humble plate of stewed vegetables “a peasant dish”
the first bite transports the critic back to his childhood, and he unabashedly gobbles the rest of it up in glee.
I had the same, pleasantly surprised reaction while watching
