MAUREEN McGill was an icon in the Co Derry teaching profession.
Born Maureen Reid in Tourmakeady, Co Mayo in 1927, she was the first child to a father in An Garda Síochána and a mother who was herself a primary school headteacher.
While she was still very young, the family moved across country to Co Louth and Ravensdale, Dundalk became her home.
She received her secondary education at the Irish-speaking St Louis’ convent school in Monaghan.
Maureen had resolved to become a primary school teacher, though she aimed to work in the northern system, as her father was an Antrim man.
