The former head of the Better Together campaign has called for Boris Johnson to stay out of the debate on Scottish independence.
In an interview with the Daily Record, Blair McDougall, who led the No campaign to a 55% victory in the 2014 referendum, agreed with Labour MP Ian Murray who said the Prime Minister poses a “greater threat to the UK than any nationalist does”.
The strategist’s comments come as Scottish independence looks to be one of the key areas heading into May’s Holyrood elections, with the SNP holding a strong lead in the polls.
The party has outlined its road map to independence if a majority of supportive MSPs are elected, which includes plans to hold another referendum even if Westminster refuse permission, effectively daring them to take legal action to stop it.
COMMENT
If the Tories were as high in the polls as the SNP it would seem unlikely they would still be calling to delay the Holyrood election DESPITE the fact we are still awaiting the first Scottish opinion poll following the British Government’s last-minute Brexit deal, it ought to be obvious enough that Johnson’s shoddy deal has not united the Scottish nation in grateful acceptance of Brexit, far less re-assured Scotland that this Conservative Government has Scottish interests at heart. Notwithstanding the plaintive calls from the Scottish Tories for us all to get behind the deal now that it’s a fait accompli, popular anger in Scotland at what the Tories have done seems only set to intensify as the realities of being outside the European single market and customs union and deprived of our previous right of freedom of movement manifest themselves.
Police officers in riot gear line up as protesters gather at the US Capitol Building. Photograph: Getty THREE prominent British Unionists have looked at what’s going on in the US with the fascist Trump’s attempt to overturn the US election with violence. They have tried to smear the independence cause in Scotland as being the same as Trump’s fascist base. This is nothing but lazy debased reactionary political filth that passes for comment from the Unionist commentariat. Its classic projection. The Unionists are accusing the independence movement of the very thing they themselves are guilty of. In 2014 it was fanatical Orange Order members who started a riot in George Square. These brutes have regularly committed acts of thuggery and violence on their so-called parades the length and breadth of Scotland for decades. All of the UK’s far-right organisations from the BNP, the DUP, the Orange Order, the National Front, the EDL, Ukip and the Tories all support the Union.
