Dutch firm Ballast Nedam has been selected to deliver the 1,300-space multistorey car park at Blackpool Central, part of the enabling phase for Nikal and Media Invest’s 17-acre leisure development.
Speaking to
Place North West, Nikal chairman Richard Fee said a hybrid planning application for the project is to go live on Friday and, subject to approval, Ballast will start the 15-month car park build in November.
Nikal and Media Invest Entertainment are to seek full approval to remediate the
Blackpool Central site, build the seven-storey car park, which has an end value of around £36m, and create the heritage quarter, while also seeking outline approval for future phases of the development.

The former managing director left to pursue other interests, as the company prepares to roll out a revised business model that will see it move away from development towards a more investment-led approach.
Nick Payne, who co-founded developer Nikal Group with Alan Murphy in 2003, told
Place North West that his departure from the company at the start of the year had been amicable.
“I spent 18 years at Nikal and it seemed like the right time to go and explore new ideas before I get too old,” he said.
“I can’t give you any drama. I have a burning desire to explore new ideas and opportunities and they are looking for a slight change in direction. I wish them all the best going forward.” He is now in the process of setting up his own company.

Developers Nikal and Media Invest Entertainment aim to submit a planning application for the first phase of the leisure project in April. Proposals include a 1,300-space multistorey car park and a heritage quarter.
“We’re looking to create something never seen before, with world-class rides and family entertainment, Blackpool Central will provide year-round attractions that will complement and future proof the town’s tourism offer,” said Norbert Reichart, chief executive of Media Invest.
A public consultation on the proposals for the £300m
Blackpool Central project is due to be launched in the coming weeks.
Following the consultation period, Nikal and Media Invest are to submit a hybrid planning application to Blackpool Council for the redevelopment of the former Blackpool Central train station close to Central Pier.
