Over the past two decades — largely since product designer Chris Messina pitched hashtags to Twitter in 2007 — activists have learned to harness the symbols to form online communities, raise awareness on pressing issues, organize protests, shape digital narratives, and redirect social media discourse.  On any given day, a series of hashtags are spotlighted in Trending section of Twitter. The hashtags featured are those that have gained traction online and reflect topics being heavily discussed in the moment. More often than not, a trending hashtag s popularity is organic, but a hashtag s origin and initial purpose can become clouded when people partake in a clever tactic called hashtag flooding.

Black Lives Matter: A year of athletic protest It has been a seismic year for sport, and no more so in athletes raising their voice in the fight for racial equality. Events in Germany have shown that, while progress has been made, there is much work to be done. Seven months on from displays of solidarity in the Bundesliga, Hertha Berlin s Jordan Torunarigha posted a picture on his Instagram account. It showed a message full of racist abuse he had been sent after Hertha s derby win against Union. It was the second time in a year that the 23-year-old had been subjected to such abuse. The resilience of Alaskan music communities 2020 has been particularly difficult for Alaskan musicians. COVID-19 eliminated many gigs in an already sparse market, and many remaining gigs went virtual. Not only did performers struggle to find audiences online, compete with global media, and effectively monetize their craft, but audience engagement was fraught with uncertainty and less rewarding in cyberspace than in the bardic boîtes they used to haunt. Livestreamed and prerecorded content has been important for keeping musical careers afloat, but they afflict performers with the very maladies that music otherwise treats feelings of emptiness and isolation.

Sussex County NJ Black Lives Matter leaders look to the future

New Jersey Herald The death of George Floyd, a Black man in the custody of Minneapolis Police in May, set off a worldwide movement featuring countless protests and conversations about racial inequalities in society. The protests even made their way to Sussex County, where more than 93% of residents are white and less than 3% are Black, according to recent census data. In a two-month period from late spring to mid-summer, five county municipalities hosted rallies that continued calls for equality in the wake of Floyd s death. While the nationwide demonstrations having died down in recent months, organizers and speakers at the Sussex County rallies are now focused on advancing the conversation for change.
