Fort Shaw was a military fort during the late 1800s. A year after the Fort was abandoned by the US military the Fort Shaw Indian Boarding School was opened. Indigenous advocates remember sorted family histories and grapple with a new federal initiative to better understand the impact of boarding schools throughout Montana and the U.S.
A national initiative announced by the U.S. Interior Secretary this spring is looking at the history of Indian boarding schools to better understand the lasting impact on survivors and their descendants. The Fort Shaw Indian Boarding School was one of those schools in Montana.

Three Montana tribal colleges will receive substantial, no-strings-attached donations from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
Chief Dull Knife College in Lame Deer will receive $1 million, while Blackfeet Community College in Browning and Salish Kootenai College in Pablo were also among the list of recipients.
Scott, the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and the company s first accountant, has called coronavirus pandemic a wrecking ball in the lives of Americans already struggling. She s pledged to give away $4 billion in recent months to various causes to help the underprivileged, including a $1 million grant to the Billings YWCA.

GREAT FALLS â Blackfeet Community College in Browning announced this week that it has received a substantial gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
Although the amount of the gift has not yet been disclosed, school officials said in a news release that Scottâs historic donation is the largest philanthropic gift that the college has ever received.
The college was included in a round of large donations to 384 organizations across the country, totaling about $4,158,500,000. Five other tribal colleges are among the recipients, including Chief Dull Knife College, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and Salish Kootenai College.
