Get your jingle on: Our staffers share their favorite holiday movies

Movies that encompass romance and nostalgia for the holidays are joined by those that made our reporters and editors laugh, jump or got their blood pumping. Staffers from the newsrooms of the Herald-Standard, Observer-Reporter, The Almanac and Greene County Messenger have offered a wide selection of holiday movies, with everyone sure to find one watch this season. While the pandemic may have forced many to alter celebration plans, the change also offers us an opportunity to slow down, relax and indulge in some at-home movie time throughout the month. There are worse things, right? So, strap yourself into the Family Truckster, toss your Red Ryder in the back and get ready for some holiday cheer.

The Prom Debuted on Netflix on Friday Here s How Twitter Feels About It

On Friday, Netflix released Ryan Murphy s adaptation of the Broadway show The Prom, featuring a brand-new, A-list cast and two new faces in the lead roles. The latter disappointed some people, who were fans of the original Emma Nolan, Caitlin Kinnunen, and the original Alyssa Greene, Isabelle McCalla. This content is imported from Twitter. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site. If you watched The Prom on Netflix, PLEASE give the original Broadway cast album a listen. The cast is full of gems and Caitlin Kinnunen deserved to reprise her role in the film (not saying Jo Ellen Perlman doesn’t deserve it, just the whole situation has been handled terribly) Emily (@thewolfofparis) December 11, 2020

Great comedy offends people and the BBC s too terrified to make it

For the past 40 years, I’ve taken television rather seriously. Week by week, I went through my copy of the Radio Times with a pen, circling the programmes I wanted to watch, often scribbling notes. However, these days I can scarcely be bothered, so woefully unimaginative are the offerings from the two principal broadcasters and, in particular, the BBC, which should know better. I still think of television as an object of brightness and joy, the way it used to be when I was growing up, but I only have to look at the new Christmas schedules to see how far it’s fallen.
