The NBR announced its 2020 award winners on Tuesday with Lee, 63, taking home the award for best director. Along with the film and Lee being honored, Chadwick Boseman, who starred in the film, was posthumously awarded the NBR Icon Award, an honor that celebrates the cinematic contributions that are meaningful to history, culture and excellence in motion pictures. Films such as Hulu’s “Palm Springs” and Amazon Prime’s “Small Axe” collection provided some high-quality-yet-small-screen respite for those missing the theatrical form. Netflix alone debuted multiple new movies weekly throughout the year. Most of these were forgettable, but the service did contribute at least a dozen films worth watching in 2020. I’ve already compiled a list of the worst Netflix movies of 2020 and the best Netflix Original shows, so now it’s time to recommend the good films.

The coronavirus pandemic closed most movie theaters in the United States by mid-March, and though many reopened over the year, cinema attendance has dwindled. Has 2020 brought us closer to a new movie-watching reality, in which the at-home experience has supplanted the theatrical one, and audiences can find new releases only by sifting through a trove of streaming and on-demand offerings? Or will 2020 just be a strange, asterisked era, a housebound interruption that dents but doesn’t destroy the appeal of the collective viewing experience?
