Fire Island Games released this “Celebration of Gay Life” in 1983, right in time for the decade’s new gay rights movement. The Community Remembrance Project of Boone County contacted law enforcement soon after learning the marker had been forcibly removed, leaving just the pedestal. The Columbia Police Department will be investigating any leads as they are provided, Chief Geoff Jones said in a statement Friday. In the meantime, we will work with Columbia Parks and Recreation to increase security for the site. We ask that anyone with information contact the Columbia Police Department or CrimeStoppers.
