Education minister says no plans to implement Black Lives Matter lesson plans yet

It takes years sometimes for curriculum review and modification to take place … this is something in the interim that teachers could access quickly, said Noreiga-Mundaroy. But Education Minister Dominic Cardy said there are no plans to implement BLM Fredericton s curriculum alongside the current social studies curriculum. Cardy said that s because he wants curriculum changes across all subjects. He said he wants to move away from the current system, which sees outcomes for students at the end of each grade, to one where students are taught everything by the time they graduate, with less attention paid to when certain subjects are taught.

We Were Here puts historical contributions of Black New Brunswickers in the spotlight

  SAINT JOHN, N.B. The stories of eight Black New Brunswickers who made historical impacts, both near and far, will be featured in an upcoming stage production called ‘We Were Here.’ “My goal is simply to allow Saint Johners to be proud of their history,” said playwright and director Clyde Wray. “The history was just buried, it’s there.” Wray has been preparing the production since he was named the Saint John Theatre Company’s artist-in-residence last fall. While the play has faced challenges from an evolving pandemic situation, a three-night virtual presentation has been scheduled for Feb. 25, 26, and 27.

Few poems have so perfectly captured the grit and dignity of Canada s oldest incorporated city.  These lines, titled Saint John, N.B. become even more remarkable when you learn the author was a Black woman born in 1887. Anna Minerva Henderson, the daughter of a schoolteacher and a barber, grew up to be an award-winning civil servant and literary pioneer. Black literary critic and Governor General s Award-winning author George Elliott Clarke describes her as the first Black woman in English in Canada to dare to publish a chapbook of verse.
